Mr. and Mrs. Fabelman take their oldest son, Sammy, to his first moving picture show, and he is mesmerized. He falls in love with the storytelling medium of cinematography and filmmaking. With the support of his creative mother and the help of his successful computer scientist father, Sammy can pursue his curiosity about filmmaking. As the Fabelman family grows and their patriarchy moves up the corporate ladder, they travel from the east coast to the midwest and ultimately to the west coast. As they travel and grow, they face their trials and tribulations, and Sammy can only find his peace through the lens of his camera.
A coming of age story through the lens of an old-fashioned video camera. The story is about a young man's struggle with his identity, his relationship with his parents, and the burden of carrying only a truth he knows. The cinematography is beautiful, and the film gives the audience a history lesson on how early special effects were created. The movie is long and progresses slowly, but it is worth a watch by the end.
