After the Pope's sudden passing, the cardinals must gather for a Conclave to elect the next Pope. Cardinal Lawrence is the dean of the Conclave and is entrusted to ensure that God's will is acted upon. As the Conclave proceeds, Cardinal Lawrence must deal with internal politics and investigate potential situations that could affect the Conclave and Church.

This is an intriguing film about the Catholic church and its process for selecting a Pope. While the depiction of the process may be exaggerated and dramatized for theatrical purposes, it still gives viewers an idea of how the Vatican operates. The story includes the church's scandal-ridden past, how individuals practice and interpret a religion, the ideas and ideals of the direction of the church's future, and modern topics that affect society. The film starts slow and builds slowly until its climax, where it gets interesting, making the runtime feel like two hours with many occasions for attention to drift. This is a riveting religious, and political drama with scandal and twists, but it can be streamed when available.
