"Asteroid City" is a play about a family attending an award ceremony for inventions made by children. The weekend-long event is filled with all sorts of characters in the small town of Asteroid City, where an asteroid hit thousands of years ago. Everything is going smoothly until the night of stargazing is interrupted by a visit from an alien, and the town is locked down, and things get interesting. This is the behind-the-scenes documentary of the creation of the play.
A play within a documentary within a movie is the best way to describe this Wes Anderson film. Like many of his other films, this one is packed with an all-star cast playing various major and minor roles. The comedy is dry, so it may only be for some. The movie feels longer than it truly is, with many parts that seem to drag on. The film may not be for everyone, but if you are a Wes Anderson fan, this movie checks all his boxes. For most, this might be a stream at home. For fans, catch it in theaters.
